Skip these “attractions”!

Travel has certainly has brought us to many interesting, exciting, unique places.  We writers often share only the most beautiful views and interesting stories of our journeys. The truth is that we visit very forgettable places too.  Here are couple of my top “must miss” attractions.  For my loyal readers and share-ers, I have a small giveaway with details at the end of the post. Thank you for your interest in my stories!

Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota

Corn Palace: Not Corny Enough!

If you are coming from the east coast/mid atlantic states, driving west on 90 is really boring until you get to central-ish South Dakota. By the time you get to the exit for Corn Palace, you may feel desperate for some distraction from the endless, flat fields that you passed.  I promise you, it is not worth it! Keep driving!  It’s not really close to the highway so you’re taking a considerable detour and wasting precious travel time on a very unattractive attraction.  It is essentially a big gift shop set up in a basketball court.  When we visited, the corn “sculptures” weren’t even on display.  There were a few mosaics made of dried corn displayed outside and a very tiny exhibit about corn farming.  It’s much more exciting to visit the kiddie rides outside of your local discount department store, I promise. The most memorable part of our afternoon at Corn Palace was the picnic lunch (and we eat basically the same lunch for weeks while we’re traveling!).

Coudersport Ice Mine, Coudersport, PA

Yes, it’s as bad as it looks. We paid $20 to look at a pile of dirty slush.

In 2017, we ventured to north central PA to visit a dark sky park.  Sadly the stars were obscured by rain clouds which also put a damper on our daytime camping adventures. We heard about the Ice Mine from a fellow traveler and thought it would be a good way to spend a rainy morning. The parking area is very tiny so leave your RV at home if you decide to venture here, though I recommend skipping it in any sized vehicle.  You are greeted at a little store where the fees to “tour” the mine are paid. It’s $5 per person for a 2 minute view. It is not even worthy of the word “tour” .  Please read my TripAdvisor review for a little more detail: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g52427-d6681828-r521114922-Coudersport_Ice_Mine-Coudersport_Potter_County_Pennsylvania.html

Now the giveaway! For 6 lucky readers, I have a small Respect the Van gift.  To enter to win, comment on my social media post or on the blog itself, then share with friends. I will randomly choose 6 folks, then get in touch with you about mailing your thank-you gift.

  1. I love your list of unattractive attractions. What a great way to help others steer clear of tourist disasters.

After a long day in the ice, snow and slush of our Pittsburgh streets, I read your post about the slushy ice mine in Coudersport. After quite a good laugh (which I needed) I thought, “never have to go there”. We have plenty around here to see for free!!
